Holland Village MILL Competition
Team Project
Batu Bench
Between the 1930s and 1960s, milestones were used to measure the distance of key
landmarks and districts across Singapore’s main roads. All milestones led to Singapore Post
Office at the Fullerton Building as its ‘zero point’. Coincidentally, Holland Village used to be the
5th milestone. The milestone was located exactly at the current Chip Bee Gardens of Holland
Village.

Inspired by the form of Singapore’s milestone, Batu reminds people of its past as a functional
landmark while they rest on this modern interpretation. Batu’s design follows the similar
dimensions of the milestone, which creates a slightly lower sitting height of 350mm. 20mm x
20mm slats of tembusu wood, 10mm apart for rainwater to seep through, spans across the
entire bench. Slats are screwed in the legs of the bench and capped with a wooden dowel to
maintain a clean and seamless surface.

Dimensions: 2000mm (L) x 350mm (W) x 350mm (H)

Stool Bench
An archetypal staple in most households between the 1960s and 1980s, the humble wooden
stool was a comforting companion which people brought along to enjoy outdoor performances,
e.g. Getai (song stage) at Holland Village. Stool Bench figuratively, and quite literally, extends an
invite for people to sit and enjoy a different kind of ‘performance’ – to watch the world go by at
‘One Holland Village’.

Inspired by the traditional construction of a wooden stool, a mixture of mortise and tenon, as
well as dowel joints is used on Stool Bench. The form is an apparent split of a round top stool
which is then elongated to 2000mm, extending from a single stool to a 3–4-person seater
bench. 50mm x 25mm slats of tembusu wood spans across the bench with 25mm gap in
between each slat on the top to allow proper water drainage.

Dimensions: 2000mm (L) x 350mm (W) x 420 (H)
Finishing: UV protective satin lacquer
