According to the English Longitudinal Study of Aging, television viewing in older adults has been associated with cognitive impairment. This is because watching television is largely an idle activity for the brain. In addition the activity itself takes away time that could be spent on neurologically nourishing endeavours, e.g. reading. Hence, how might we develop a solution that helps prevent memory loss and train memory among the elderly population?
Living In A Hyper-Connected World
Pixel is an Internet Of Things platform that thrives in a hyper-connected world. It works with 2 appliances, a smart television (TV) and a printer. Using the smart TV’s inbuilt camera, Pixel detects and stores people’s engagement levels through postures and facial expressions.
Pixel understands what content engages people as that information is tagged to the TV programme that invoked the response. As the database expands overtime, Pixel can predict when someone is losing interest and recommends an activity based on the content that engages the viewer. The suggested activity is then automatically printed out, providing a tangible nudge for the elderly.
Paper printouts are tangible and familiar to the elderly. Moreover, the suggested content is actionable and aligns with their interests, which is deduced from the content they watch.
